Either the folklorist's/collector's first (wax) recording of it*... or 
nobody. I go with the latter, as we haven't got the wax rolls in the system.

*: "it" being that particular version of the song - several folklorists 
could have collected different versions of the songs independently of 
one another, or one collector could have collected different versions 
from different sources (or even from the same source!). The safest bet 
is just not to attribute it as a cover of anyone, unless they're 
specifically noting it as being such. (I also wish we could store tune 
books in the system, as this is how tunes were collected before (and 
even to some degree while) being able to record the sounds...)
