rate-effect: output bitdepth and dither?

Hi there.

I am running the latest cvs version.

ISSUE:

Command:

sox -V -t wavpcm -e si -b 16 -c 2 -r 44100 $I -t alsa -b 24 -c 2 plughw:0,0 rate -s -v 96000

tells me:

sox INFO sox: effects chain: input      44100Hz 2 channels 16 bits (multi)
sox INFO sox: effects chain: rate       44100Hz 2 channels 16 bits
sox INFO sox: effects chain: dither     96000Hz 2 channels 32 bits
sox INFO sox: effects chain: output     96000Hz 2 channels 32 bits (multi)

Q1: WHy 32 bit? As you see I specified 24.
Q2: Why dithering?

THX
Klaus
