Well, locally it wouldn't be a problem, since we check
for pid collision upon ingest, whether the pid
generator is involved or not.

IMO the PID syntax restriction is a good thing...
mainly because PIDs are used in URLs, and URLs have
syntax restrictions.  And hopefully having a
namespace-id part ala urns is enough to get people to
use globally-unique ids.
