I keep the standard settings found in Ubuntu 8.04, which means that the bytecode interpreter is not enabled. I use autofit (autohinting). Indeed, DejaVu is apparently fine. The character ᾷ appears as if it has a macron (flat horizontal line) to me when all these apply: 1. The font is DejaVu Sans Mono 2. The font size is 12 points (it has to be 12 points) 3. In the font properties, Hinting has been set to Slight (it has to be "Slight") It is interesting to note that no matter what the other options are set in the gnome-appearence-properties applet, it is the setting of Hinting to Slight that makes the difference.
