Autoconf/automake versioning problem (bug?)

When I install the cvs version of libpano12 (with ./bootstrap; ./configure; 
make; make install), libpano is installed 
as /usr/local/lib/libpano12.so.0.0.0, with a symbolic link from 
libpano12.so.0 and libpano12.so to libpano12.so.0.0.0 .
I think that it's not what it's supposed to be. I think that libpano should be 
installed as libpano12.so.2.7.0, with a symbolic link from libpano12.so.2 and  
libpano12.so .

Could you correct this (if it's a bug) ?
