Problem assigning longints in a windows XP environment

I have a method which has been working for many years an still works
in a mac and most win xp environments.

In a situation where the user accesses the app and this method using a
Windows Remote Desktop Connection, straight field to variable
assignments are not happening. The result is always 0.

The problem happens in a compiled server db.

I have inserted debugging code to display the values of the fields and
the variables before and after the assignments and although the fields
(longints) have values, the variables always have zero.

If I run the same complied app locallythe asignments work perfectly.

I have spent a lot of time trying to resolve this issue and have made
no headway. Help would be greatly appreciated.

SVG 2 DWG

DWG 2 SVG

if you want to be independent, both formats are text, you could do it
yourself :-)

DWG, DWF and SVG

I need to support output in DWG format. I've found applications that convert
DWG to DWF but would like to get feedback on how to use these formats with V
11's SVG capabilities.

I'd appreciate anyone who has experience, suggestions, or ideas on this
topic.

Thanks.

Re: 4d_tech Digest, Vol 17, Issue 26

Thomas,

> There is realistic, and then there is the law. ;-)

I completely agree and I always like to stay on the right side of the law.
If that means not using the license I have paid for because it would be in
contravention of the law then that is what I would have to do.

I was simply looking for some clarity from 4D as to their intent. As you
say there is the law and there is also the matter of enforceability and
intent.

Taken literally this licence would prohibit email, ftp, saving documents to
remote drives, messaging, CTI, use of Web area to connect to a website (only
local file access) or any other communication to a machine (not the machine
the application is sitting on) unless limited to twice a day. I can think of
very few standalone applications (let alone database application) I have
ever used that would cope with these restrictions.

As I pointed out technically it is the plug-in that is doing the
communication not 4D so it should not be a problem for connecting to
PostgreSQL but what of the native 4D capabilities that this excludes.

I agree it defies rational explanation. Nevertheless that is 4D's official
line, that accessing an external non-4D database (beyond a twice-a-day
sync'ing operation) requires a special license. My information comes not
only from reading the license language, but the president of 4D has
confirmed it personally (and he has also stated unequivocally that this
restriction exists in 4D 2004 as well).

- John.

Arial Narrow issue on Windows

Greetings

I am having a problem using Arial Narrow in 8 point, on Windoze

Everything works fine on Mac, but when I open up the structure on
Windows, anything in Arial Narrow 8pt is all screwed up. By which I
mean that the leading is all wrong and it doesn't really look like
Arial Narrow. If I switch to 9 or 7 point everything looks fine. Bold
& italic both exhibit the same issue.

This is happening on more than one Windows machine so it is not a
specific glitch on one computer. I have tried both with and without
style sheets, same issue.

Other fonts appear to work ok, it's just Arial Narrow which is duff.
The line spacing appears to be too great - if I switch to Arial 8 the
block of text takes up less room that the block in Arial Narrow, which
obviously can't be right as there are more words per line - but the
spacing between the lines with Arial Narrow is too much.

Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas? Other than using a different
font?

TIA

4D 2004.7 Server Memory Usage

Hi All,

I have read through the many posts about cache and memory in the NUG,
however it doesn't appear there are any definitive guidelines on how
high to set the Cache in a 4D 2004.7 server configuration. Is there
anyone from 4D (the company) that can chime in and let us know how to
determine cache settings for optimal client/server performance? That
would be very helpful.

Also, in my server preference settings it list physical memory at
2048 MB, however our server has 4 GB. Am I misinterpreting this or
does 4D sever 2004.7 only address 2 GB of RAM?

Thanks to all!!
Kirk

Cursor Position In Text Field

Hi Everyone,

I was just checking to see if anyone knew of a way that I could get
the cursor position in a text field?

My goal is to insert text to the right of the cursor position in a text
field.

I looked through the online documentation for the command to
return it, but could not find one.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, I would love to hear them.

Thanks,

Re: 4D 11 SQL Licensing Issues

John,

I was thinking about the situation with connecting to an SQL database and
realised that technically it is not 4D that is making the connection it is
actually the plug-in. I am then binding the resulting data to arrays and
variables held locally. So this should not be an issue...

I believe that they must be simply clarifying that this is not a server
product and that to use it for "SQL Pass-through or ODBC Login" for instance
you would need SQL Desktop.

Any other assertion becomes odd the more you think about it. Jan-Willem
stated he carried out imports and exports to other systems. Taking the hard
line I would only be allowed to import/export via file, ftp or any other
communication method twice a day. I would not be allowed to integrate email
or any communication method nor access documents on a remote volume more
than twice a day.

I think we have to be realistic in this.

If this is not the case then it would be better for me to buy 4D Developer
Standard and SQL Desktop when needed. Given the low number of clients I
deploy this solution for it would probably work out cheaper and I would move
the costs to deployment not development.
