MP3 Encoders?

HI All,

I am looking for an MP3 encoding framework that i can embed in my app  
to take snippets of audio and encode as MP#.

I read about LAME, but visiting their website there is no API  
documentation, no examples, no anything. I downloaded the source and  
their is an XCode project to make LAME a framework, but it does not  
compile and still no API so I know what is what.

Does anyone know of any other MP3 encoding frameworks out there?
