Hi Rick,

I suspect the dynamic libraries in my distribution are the problem:
looking at the process map for hugin while running shows DLLs
scattered all over the address space. The biggest gap is only about
1GB, which would explain why you couldn't allocate a bigger chunk than
that.

Unfortunately, it's surprisingly hard to make a pure static build of
hugin under mingw32 -- cmake *really* wants to use dlls and things
break without them. I muddled through and got it to compile but the
resulting binaries were so big I ran out of disk space (laptop's
almost full anyway)... have to delete some files and try again.

Given that GPU blending also works on Allard's build it might be best
to stick with it for now.
