I would suggest instead that Rubens edit the appropriate news.rc file.
e.g. if the problematic newsgroup is mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey, locate
a line in the file similar to:

mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey: 1-7710,7712-8760,8762-8854

And then "close up the gaps" as follows:

mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey: 1-8854
