Extracting translatable strings.

I'm looking at how I can use the already existing classes in PHPTAL to extract 
translatable strings (i18n:attributes, i18n:translate). Looking back in the 
mailing list archive, I found that someone came up with nearly the same idea 
for generating documentation.
Did that project ever come any further, or does anybody have an idea on how to 
extract strings from templates?
