That is what I expected from these files.  I have done this several times
with other lists.  The problem is that after I do gzip -d to one of these
files, I still have a binary file that isn't recognized by the e-mail client.
After a little experimenting this weekend, I discovered that for some strange
reason, these files are compressed twice.  I found that if I do gzip -d
and then gzip -d again on the result of the first one, then I have a normal
file.  Why would they be zipped twice?  I have never seen this on any other
list and it isn't made obvious at
http://ghostscript.com/pipermail/gs-devel/

Oh well, I have finally extracted the last 12 years so I can search.
