Just to clarify, the only thing at least *I* was asking for was for
simple announcements to be made in the 'usual  suspects' lists (here,
numpy/scipy) to keep people in the loop.  Nothing more.  Just like
pythonxy mentions new releases, or occasionally John Hunter and I do
it for major mpl/ipython ones.  It doesn't need to create unnecessary
discussion and helps keep in the loop people who are already drowning
in mailing lists and don't want to subscribe to special -announce
ones.

That doesn't sound unreasonable to me, but perhaps I'm just missing something.
