Request: Merge Tags and Tag Synonyms

I'm awfully inconsistent about using the same tag names. Worse, when I did a big import of Google Reader starred items I ended up with some really awful tags that came from blogs I follow (well, awful for a site that uses spaces to delimit tags, among other reasons).

I have ended up with a totally unmanageable number of tags, most of which are duplicative and pointless. I've been thinking of doing an analysis to find words that are likely synonyms and fixing my tags through the API, but it's a lot of work for someone as inexperienced as I am and the feature seems useful enough that others should have access to it.

So, while tag bundles seem to be the hot feature request du jour, I'd love some additional tag management tools. Merging would be the first priority, in my view, as it works to simplify my existing tags and I could keep things clean by hand using the merge feature going forward. Synonyms would be super great because the maintenance of clean tags would be far more automated going forward.
