awesome developement news
Hi folks, Some weeks passed since the last news, so for people playing at home, here is an overview of what happened and what may happen. awesome 2 --------- Well, awesome 2 is now in maintenance mode like I said earlier.[1] Maintenance releases will be done when enough bugfixes has reached the git repository. A 2.3.1 version has already been released. awesome 3 --------- There is great news on the awesome 3 front. First of all, the Lua API is quite over and stable. People are even beginning to write extension libraries, so we're on the good way until now. A lot of new feature have been added, making awesome 3 very powerful and attractive. There's now tabs, systray support, fully configurable titlebars, etc. The xcb work has been almost finalized, making awesome a lot of faster, even if it was already damn fast (YMMV). As I announced in a earlier mail today, I began to write a documentation reference on the wiki[2]. I planned to release final version this summer is everything was fine, and I still do. I hope to release a first pre1 version in the next days, probably after the cmake transition is done, if everything goes fine and if we do not lose everything in the process (who knows). This will also permit to deprecate awesome 2. By the way, if you're working on something you want me to wait before releasing pre1 or any particular version in the future, please raise. xcb support ----------- A word about XCB support in OSes and various distros. I only can talk for Debian, but on this side, things get big progress since xcb-util with Arnaud patches is now in unstable, and cairo now provides the xcb backend. So if you want to compile awesome 3 on Debian, you can install everything via apt. If people wants to report for other OS, please do so. As always, good hacking, and be awesome.
