Re: pumice as sculpting medium
That's what I thought concerning the "hell on steel tools" and thanks = for the reminder about the silica. We're back to the best idea being always wear a mask and also get the dust away before taking off the mask. I believe Eugenia mainly uses it as a sand ingredient to make a kind of plaster but the sand dust, of course, is not safe to breath. -----Original Message----- From: stone-bounce@... Subject: [stone] Re: pumice as sculpting medium Hi all, I just need to add one note of caution regarding carving pumice. It is=20 basically pure volcanic glass, so the dust is pure silica. Anyone who = works=20 with pumice needs to use a good dust mask. Other then that, it is a real = cool stone to play with! The first stone carving class I attended provided some pumice stone. One = fellow attacked his stone with a brand new set of Italian riffler files. = About half way into his project all the files were worn out. Pumice may=20 carve easily, but it is hell on steel tools.
