Hi Everyone,

It's been years since I've posted here but I've been reading right along. I
thought you might be interested in a trike that a reader of my web site 'The
Steampunk Workshop' sent in. It's a fairly conventional tadpole design but
it's been outfitted 'Steampunk' style and includes a pair of kerosene coach
lamps!

The story is here:
http://steampunkworkshop.com/the-brass-lion-steampunk-recumbent

Cheers!

Jake.

Well, I can see how they subtly tried to emphasize all the usual =
objections to recumbents i.e. "recumbut" and "too low to the ground" =
etc. However, we must remember the old saying "there is no such thing =
as bad publicity only publicity." :)

SueW still riding the laid back way - just a bit older...well A LOT =
older! :)

I'm seldom surprised when an inaccuracy appears in the popular media. I'm
more often surprised when an article is accurate. I wrote an email to the
journalist taking her to task on the "recumbents are hard to see"
portion, although my criticism was not directed at her.
Sadly, recumbent riders are as much at fault, and I was once a guilty
accomplice. I've since reformed and become a vehicular cyclist and I no
longer have to make the traditional qualifier, "recumbents are more
visible because they are different."
I politely suggested to Janet Cromley to research vehicular and effective
cycling, rather than fire off an unwarranted scathing email.
Even though my velomobile is probably lower than many recumbents, drivers
of motor vehicles have no problem seeing me, as I occupy the center of
the lane. The roadways on which I usually drive are multi-lane, so
traffic is able to go around me easily enough.
Lucky for me, Florida Statutes do not require the use of shoulders or
bike lanes, as in some states, and also consider a roadway of
under-fourteen feet width to be sub-standard. In sub-standard width
lanes, a bicyclist can use the entire lane. My experience with motorists
is that they will mostly give you enough passing room, but I'm no longer
going to take the risks associated with "mostly" and have found that the
safety level has increased ten-fold for my riding.
It's been a bit more than six months since I've begun this practice and
other than educating many law enforcement officers, I've had few
incidents. The horn-blowing has been reduced and any horns are given my
usual response, a wave of the hand (with all five fingers).
Perhaps the journalist will do some research on her own and publish a
suitable article. Oh, wait, I'll wake up now.
... maybe I won't have to... Janet just sent me an email asking for
permission to print portions of my email to her! Wow! If a reader of the
LAT happens across a follow-up, please post!

Hey everyone,

I have finally got around to posting some details about this
Saturday's ride, and our attendance at the BIG on Bloor festival. You
can find it all here:
http://hpv.gedris.org/index.php/BIG_Festival_2008

Basically, we'll meet up at 10:30am at Grange Park, leave for a ride
along the lake and Humber River at 11:00, and then gather at the BIG
on Bloor festival for about 1:00pm.

We're officially registered with a table etc. at the BIG festival.
That means we can display bikes, etc...etc.. So please drop by, even
if you can't come for the whole ride or stick around for the whole afternoon.

Please RSVP to me if you're planning to come, so that we make sure we
wait up for you: vic <at> gedris.org

Cheers,
Vic
