Equation Editor -- fonts required?

AbiWord 2.6.8, downloaded from Sourceforge
Plugins and Import/Export installed
Windows XP SP3
I'm having a bit of trouble with the equation editor. If I click Insert > Equation > From LaTeX, I get the LaTeX
Equation dialog. So far, so good.
If I type in something really simple, like y=mx+b, it displays after I click Insert. Something a little more
complex, like \frac{3\pi }{2} displays a fraction, but the fraction it displays is 3ΒΌ/2. If I type
\sqrt{2}, I get vminus over t times the quantity of 2 (a v with a superscript of a minus sign directly above a
t, times a 2 in parentheses). Similarly, \int {x\,dx} displays as Rx dx.
It's obvious that special symbols aren't being displayed. My assumption is that these should be drawn by
fonts, and my system must not have the fonts, hence AbiWord is substituting what it thinks is the next best thing.
What fonts should I look for in my fonts folder?
Also, in standard mathematics typesetting, variables are italicized. Is there an equation editor
options panel where I can set this? How about the font? It's sans-serif, but I want a serif font.
Thanks,
Bob Mathews
