Accented letters using US keyboard

Hi all,

I am using a US keyboard and I need to write French texts in Abiword.
How can I type accented letters without going each time into the menu 
"Insert > Symbol..." or Ctrl+M ?
Something like "Super_key + ` + e" to get "e grave"

I use Abiword 2.6.8 on Xubuntu 9.04
