An additional remark and something to consider from my side: since we
seem to be looking at a release-definer here (something for which
we're waiting before we can create a release), it seems there's no
longer any reason to keep this on a branch.

So, after some more fixes and moving code around, I propose to merge
the branch to trunk and work on it there until we can release
[hopefully this month!]
