People interested in this might like Doodim 
<http://www.lachoseinteractive.net/en/products/doodim/>.  Looks like it 
dims everything but the focused app.  It's not exactly full-screen mode, 
but it may be close enough.

(It may not even support Lion, I don't know. I've never used it, it's 
just something I ran across.)
