In AACR2, the decision to add the designations of function comp., ed., ill.
and tr. is an optional one. See 21.0D: "Optional addition. Designations of
function."

The same rule says, "In specialist or archival cataloguing, when desirable
for identification or file arrangement, add designations from standard lists
appropriate to the material being catalogued."

The LCRI to 21.0D says, 

"LC practice: Do not apply the designations of function specified by AACR2.
Exception: The designation 'ill.' will be added to the headings for
illustrators occurring in added entries in bibliographic records for
resources intended for children.

"Note that LC does apply the part of the rule that provides for using
designations in specialist or archival cataloging from standard lists
appropriate to the material being cataloged."   

Therefore, libraries adhering to the letter of AACR 2 and the LCRI will not
add these designators to headings for most materials.
