It depends on what the duplication is about.  The original question asked 
about giving the same title in both 740 and 775.  Since the fields have 
entirely different purposes, the duplication is entirely appropriate.  The 
740 field is an access field; that is, it is meant to make an index entry 
for the title in the field.  The 775 field is a linking field, and is NOT 
intended as an access point.  As explained in MARC 21, "When an added entry 
is needed for a title used in a linking field, the added entry is recorded 
in the appropriate 700-730 field. Linking fields are not intended to take 
the place of added entries. Likewise, an added entry in field 700-730 does 
not take the place of a linking field, as it cannot cause a note to be 
generated or carry a record link."  (Note:  Although it does not mention 
740, the 740 field would be used "... for added entries for uncontrolled 
related titles ... . Uncontrolled means that the title is not controlled 
through an authority file or another bibliographic record. The field may 
contain the title portion of a related work that would normally be entered 
under a name/title heading in catalog entry form."  So, for instance, the 
775 field might contain an author name, but the 740 field would contain the 
title only.)
