If it sounds like a library, it might be...

This from a press release from Rutgers-New Brunswick, they are outsourcing
their university bookstore to B&N:

"In addition to the new and enhanced services and programs Barnes & Noble
will bring to the university bookstores, the superstore will be a
destination in itself. It will be a place for readings by renowned authors
who can just hop off the train from New York or Philadelphia. It will be a
comfortable gathering place and a stimulating venue for special events. The
superstore at The Gateway will serve as a dynamic bridge between Rutgers and
the residents of New Brunswick."

"We are thrilled to have formed this partnership with Rutgers," said Max J.
Roberts, president of Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, Inc. "Working with
Rutgers, we'll create a best in class collegiate superstore that will become
a knowledge and cultural hub for the university and the New Brunswick
communities."

Draw your own conclusions. For me, it just means the competition for "hearts
and mind's" (and tax dollars) just got a bit tougher.

NFAIS workshop on Usage Statistics planned

NFAIS Workshop: Usage Statistics: New Developments and Practical Applications
Planned for October 21st, in New York City

You and your colleagues might be interested in an upcoming NFAIS one-day workshop: Usage Statistics: New
Developments and Practical Applications. NFAIS' Best Practices/Usage Statistics Committee is
organizing the meeting. This meeting, scheduled for October 21, 2008 at the Graduate Center of the City
University of New York, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY from 9:00am to 4:30pm, will take a look at some of the
new developments in usage statistics that have recently emerged, as well as the current practical
applications of usage statistics.

The meeting will open with an update on the progress made by the two key standards for the creation and
harvesting of usage statistics - Project COUNTER and SUSHI. Publishers and librarians will present case
studies on how they currently gather, analyze and make informed decisions based upon the data that usage
statistics provide. Of equal importance, they will highlight the pitfalls that must be avoided
throughout the process so that the statistics are not unintentionally misused.

The implications of three new related projects will also be discussed: NISO's development of identifiers
that will allow for the precise recognition of an institution and its relationships with its various
libraries, departments, offices, etc., and two initiatives that are attempting to provide usage-based
metrics for the scholarly evaluation of articles and journals (Project MESUR and Usage Factor). The
meeting will close with a visionary discussion on how usage statistics can be improved and used in the
future to help institutions make informed decisions.

For more information about the meeting and the roster of professionals scheduled to present at this
important workshop, please visit the following: http://www.nfais.org/events/event_details.cfm?id=53.

Libraries that created web pages for audio/video e-resources

Dear All,

I am looking for examples from other libraries who create specific web
page(s) for list of audio/video web sites and/or subscriptions (not
tied with specific digitization project in the library.) I'd like to
learn how other libraries present those collections for the users.

The only example that I could find so far belongs to University of
Minnesota (http://www.lib.umn.edu/site/videos.phtml).

Any pointers, other examples, etc. would be appreciated.

thanks,
ranti.

Library Drupal BoF in Chicago - Fri. 10/24 (2pm)

Okay, we've firmed up the time and location of our Library Drupal BoF in
Chicago.

It's going to be on Friday, Oct. 24 at 2pm. We'll be meeting in UIC's
Innovation Center (1240 W. Harrison) which is just west of Racine.

The BoF will be pretty open-ended with everyone encouraged to
participate. The goals (besides getting together) are:

* Showcase library-related Drupal projects in the Chicagoland area.
* Talk about future plans and aspirations, field questions and compare
experiences.

All levels of experience are welcome. Got an idea? Please send any
comments or suggestions to me!

Note, this is part of the larger Chicago Drupal Camp taking place on
Friday and Saturday (10/24-10/25) Thanks to the herculean efforts of
the event organizers, the event website is officially up:

http://drupalcampchicago.org/

You can get an idea of the final program (and even propose something
yourself) by looking at the Session Wiki:

Hope to see you!
