Reverse proxying for offsite (subscription) databases

Hi folks

We're currently using EZProxy for user authentication and connection to offsite databases for our
remote users. It's worked well for us so far, except that it seems to use a set of . . . exotic
ports to serve the proxied sites. This is a problem for some of our users, especially behind large
corporate or government firewalls.

Is anyone using Apache to perform a similar function (but using port 80 exclusively)? I'm sure I
could set up Squid to do the same thing, but our current hardware may not be able to cope well with
that much more strain.

Future of libraries

Indeed, I think we've become so focused on discussing the future of libraries that we are not engaging with
the present tense of libraries, and the answer to the question of the future is inherent in the choices we
make now ... if our current choices are focused on the correct objectives, I think the future will be
assured, because it will flow out of what we already understand .... how's that for getting meta-physical?

Sadly, it seems very few of us realize that we've been living the same day
over and over again for what must be decades by now.

Start Pages in library (instructions)

Some months ago I asked on this list if there where any libraries which use
start pages like Netvibes, Pageflakes in their instructions.
A lot people asked me to share the results.
On the EAHIL-conference last june I presented a paper on Libraries an Start
Pages in which I used the outcome of my question.

If anyone is interested you can read the paper:

RE: libdex.com

I recently went to quite a lot of trouble to update entries for our
library on libdex, but without success. When the update method it
offers failed I emailed the contacts it listed but these all bounced
back. I then went online to try to find the owners online (Bisca
International Investments, based in
Gibraltar) but their url returned an Apache holding page and all emails
to them also bounced back to me or disappeared into the great unknown.
A search for them on Google still finds information but seems to get you
nowhere.

So I suspect libdex is a dead duck, but I'd be very happy to hear
otherwise.

Extended Validation and WebTV

We recently upgraded our SSL certificate to VeriSign's Secure Site Pro
with Extended Validation. I've had several calls from WebTV customers
who get an error message along the lines of not being able to establish
an encrypted connection. I called WebTV and the rep didn't even
recognize the name "VeriSign", but suggested powering down, powering up,
clearing cookies, and restarting. Does anyone have additional
information I can pass along to patrons?

Thanks,

Media Hosting Options - Recommendations?

Hi!

Our library is looking at the cost/benefit issues related to hosting media
in-house vs. hosting it externally with a free or paid service. We are
exploring the various options out there (e.g. YouTube for videos), but are
wondering if any of the wonderful web librarians out there have had this
experience themselves. We're worried that the cost of upping our bandwidth
in order to adequately host multimedia will cost more than we can afford, or
more than the benefit it will afford us. Hosting on outside sites, though,
carries its own risks such as a lack of reliable data archiving, possible
ads, lack of branding, etc.

So, if you've hosted multimedia at your library internally, please tell us
how that's going. And if you've hosted it externally, please let us know
that as well, including any data you have on the cost, storage limits,
bandwidth limits, terms of agreement and privacy issues, ads, and so forth.

Any information is appreciated - so don't hold back!

What I am saying is there list members responsible for keeping library
