They have a free (as in beer) service and a subscription service which
costs money.

The music database they create is licensed under the following license:

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/

The GNU/Linux audio player they distribute is licensed under the GPL.

So I guess you can decide if that is what you meant by "free".
