A Solution to the Problem of Configuration in Linux

What is configuration in Linux? What do experienced system administrators
do when they need to, for example, modify the access rights to a Web site
or change the network settings for their server? Invariably, they're
going to login into the machine and edit a text file using a Unix editor
such as vi or Emacs. That by itself isn't that bad, but depending on which
application you want to configure and which Linux distribution you happen
to be using, the location of the file you need to edit (and maybe even the
format of the file) could be completely unknown.

About: Alumni-OnLine is a PHP/DBMS-based program to make a connection
between alumni. Sending messages and searching for someone is so easy. It
has different levels of user rights, and is easy to install, configure,
and use.

Changes: System security was rearranged, a message board was added, and it
is no longer necessary to place Alumni-OnLine at root directory of your
Web server. Paging in listings is now available (such as in the user or
news lists), a username field was added to the ao_users table, and users
can now users select any non-spacing word as their username.

About: atool is a script for managing file archives of various types (tar,
tar+gzip, zip, etc). The main command is probably 'aunpack' which extracts
files from an archive. It overcomes the dreaded "multiple files in archive
root" problem by first extracting to a unique subdirectory, and then
moving back the files if possible. aunpack also prevents local files from
being overwritten by mistake. Other commands provided are apack (for
creating archives), als (for listing files in archives), and acat (for
extracting files to stdout).

Changes: The list of files to add to archives can now be read from
standard in. The exit code when failing is now fixed.

About: AutoGen is a tool designed for generating program files that
contain repetitive text with varied substitutions. Its goal is to simplify
the maintenance of programs that contain large amounts of repetitious
text. This is especially valuable if there are several blocks of such text
that must be kept synchronized. Output is specified with a Scheme-enhanced
output template. Input, if required by your template, may come from
AutoGen definitions, CGI data, or XML files.

Changes: A fix for a gcc aliasing bug (gcc 3.x failes to notice that a
variable is aliased with a pointer; consequently, it optimizes away the
update of the variable), and a minor formatting tweak for usage output. If
you do not use gcc 3.x, you do not need this release.

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: Some new options were added to apt-get and apt-build completion,
and gvim now completes in the same way as vim.

much terser file consisting of single-line rules. These suffice to do the
most common mail filing, making maintenance of a procmailrc very easy for

Checkbot creates a report which summarizes all links which caused some

example style file was added. The --sleep implementation was changed so

About: The Group Enabled Cluster Compiler (gecc) distributes the
compilation (of C/C++ code) on a cluster of hosts. Compiled code is
cached, so rebuilds with little or no changes to the source are much
faster.

Changes: The combination of caching and distribution is working. This
release is the first in which both features work with the much simplified
process model. There is still work to do, but with this release gecc can
be used to compile working software. It has been tested with several
mainstream packages as found on SourceForge.

About: IPA allows one to perform IP accounting based on FreeBSD IPv4/v6
Firewall, OpenBSD Packet Filter, and IP Filter accounting rules on
Free/Net/OpenBSD. It supports limits for accounting rules, and limits
events such as "limit is reached" and "reached limit is expired." It also
has a flexible configuration file with many sections and options.

Changes: All of the code was revised, and it now tests directories and
files in the database more carefully. The "acl", "db_owner", and "db_perm"
configuration parameters have been removed, and "db_group" was added.
Several bugs and a memory leak with the "db_dir" parameter were fixed. The
-u switch was removed from ipastat and the -L switch was added. ipa and
ipastat no longer use database locking by default. The manual pages were
updated and some minor bugs were fixed.

About: IPShutter listens for connections on one port, and upon proper
authentication temporarily unlocks a second port. The unlocking is brief
(by default two minutes) and only applies to the IP address from which
the authentication occurred. It is useful for restricting access to
sshd. It uses and generates one-time passwords for authentication, which
is accomplished with a Web browser. Abusive or password-guessing IP
addresses are subject to two levels of banning.

Changes: IPShutter now reads its configuration from /etc/ipshutterrc.
Also, daemonization works correctly.

(track, jogging, etc.) events. It prints all results and a document for
each runner.

Changes: New functionality to add Startnumber frames to the EventEdit
dialog and use them in the Edit Runner dialog, new functions to select a
special amount of runners in the certification view, configurable
TeamSize, a new ListBox to ignore a team for team evaluation (maybe no
team), and saving the Password encoded in the config file.

About: larswm is a modified version of the 9wm window manager that adds
virtual desktops, automatic window tiling, and many other features
designed to make it a highly efficient user environment. One of the design
goals is that you should never have to manually shuffle windows around on
the screen. Another is that it should use as little CPU time, RAM, and
screen space for itself as possible.

Changes: The change to window handling when untiling a window was rolled
back since a lot of clients do not set proper size and position hints. If
you are using 7.2.4, upgrading is recommended.

About: MessageWall is an SMTP proxy. It sits between the outside world and
your mail server and keeps out viruses, spam, and mail relaying. It offers
filtering via header and body checks, DNS-based blacklists for IP
addresses (DNSBL) and domains (RHSBL), DNS-based distributed checksumming
(DNS DCC) similar to Vipul's Razor, and Open AntiVirus pattern scanning.
Unlike many existing ISP-level filtering solutions, it offers
customization of filtering features on a per-address basis. Unlike
SpamAssassin, it communicates via SMTP, so it works with any MTA. It also
supports scoring based on rules with a rejection threshold; this allows
hybrid warning/rejection configurations based on how many and which rules
a message matches.

Changes: An SMTP compliance bugfix and a fix for a possible 100% CPU usage
bug, updated Red Hat startup scripts, and updates to the build system for
Solaris compatibility.

About: rubrica is an address book written using GTK+ and GNOME. It allows
you to add personal data (name, surname, address, etc.), Web links, email
addresses, telephone numbers, job information (company where contact
works, company infos, contact's assigment, etc.) and notes. XML is used to
store the data. It can import addressbooks from GnomeCard and export to
HTML.

Changes: This version has been ported to GNOME 2. It is not yet complete
(the search and sort features have not yet been ported), but it is stable
and usable. The GUI was improved, and the configuration dialog window has
been rewritten.

About: Vstr is a string library designed for network communication, but
applicable in a number of other areas. It works on the idea of separate
nodes of information, and works on the length/ptr model and not the
termination model a la "C strings". It can also do automatic referencing
for mmap() areas of memory, and includes a portable version of a
printf-like function.

Changes: Functions were added for ASCII case insensitive searching, and
custom format specifiers were added for printing values rounded to Kilo,
Mega or Giga for human readability. The '%m' format was made standard to
save conversion time. Workarounds were added for gcc 2.95.x and gcc 3.2
miscompilation, and a couple of other speedups were made.

About: WebClipboard aims to extend a clipboard Internet-wide. It uses an
FTP or Web server to store the clips, and clips must be manually cut and
pasted to it. It now supports HTTP via a PHP upload page that must be
installed. The aim is to have native daemons interact with the OS specific
clipboard so that no manual handgrips will be necessary. So far only text
is supported.

Changes: Added daemon support, which polls your clipboard and uploads new
clips automatically, so that it is not necessary to manually push
'webcopy' (pasting must still be done manually).
