A Solution to the Problem of Configuration in Linux
by Jason Long (mailto:jl1192 <at> messiah.edu)
Section: Editorials
Saturday, September 28th 2002 00:00
What is configuration in Linux? What do experienced system administrators
do when they need to, for example, modify the access rights to a Web site
or change the network settings for their server? Invariably, they're
going to login into the machine and edit a text file using a Unix editor
such as vi or Emacs. That by itself isn't that bad, but depending on which
application you want to configure and which Linux distribution you happen
to be using, the location of the file you need to edit (and maybe even the
format of the file) could be completely unknown.

[001] - Alumni-OnLine 2.1.0.0
by Fatih (http://freshmeat.net/users/fatihboy/)
Saturday, September 28th 2002 05:35
Communications
Education
Internet
About: Alumni-OnLine is a PHP/DBMS-based program to make a connection
between alumni. Sending messages and searching for someone is so easy. It
has different levels of user rights, and is easy to install, configure,
and use.
Changes: System security was rearranged, a message board was added, and it
is no longer necessary to place Alumni-OnLine at root directory of your
Web server. Paging in listings is now available (such as in the user or
news lists), a username field was added to the ao_users table, and users
can now users select any non-spacing word as their username.

Communications :: Chat
About: Anna is a set of AIML (Artificial Intelligence Markup Language)
files that constitute a chat bot. Unlike other Chat Bots, Anna declares
herself to be human, and then has a past, personality, and identity built
up from there. Anna is designed to win the 2002 Loebner Prize Competition,
and is based on the landmark work of the ALICE AI foundation.
Changes: This release includes the new topics.aiml intended to make topic
matching better, and lots of minor tweaks and fixes. The Web server should
again be fully functional.

[004] - atool 0.23.0
by Oskar Liljeblad (http://freshmeat.net/users/osk/)
Saturday, September 28th 2002 09:43
System :: Archiving
About: atool is a script for managing file archives of various types (tar,
tar+gzip, zip, etc). The main command is probably 'aunpack' which extracts
files from an archive. It overcomes the dreaded "multiple files in archive
root" problem by first extracting to a unique subdirectory, and then
moving back the files if possible. aunpack also prevents local files from
being overwritten by mistake. Other commands provided are apack (for
creating archives), als (for listing files in archives), and acat (for
extracting files to stdout).
Changes: The list of files to add to archives can now be read from
standard in. The exit code when failing is now fixed.

Other/Nonlisted Topic
Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: AutoGen is a tool designed for generating program files that
contain repetitive text with varied substitutions. Its goal is to simplify
the maintenance of programs that contain large amounts of repetitious
text. This is especially valuable if there are several blocks of such text
that must be kept synchronized. Output is specified with a Scheme-enhanced
output template. Input, if required by your template, may come from
AutoGen definitions, CGI data, or XML files.
Changes: A fix for a gcc aliasing bug (gcc 3.x failes to notice that a
variable is aliased with a pointer; consequently, it optimizes away the
update of the variable), and a minor formatting tweak for usage output. If
you do not use gcc 3.x, you do not need this release.

by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
Saturday, September 28th 2002 15:38
System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities
About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.
Changes: Some new options were added to apt-get and apt-build completion,
and gvim now completes in the same way as vim.

Saturday, September 28th 2002 01:04
Communications :: File Sharing
Desktop Environment :: File Managers

About: FileLister is a filesystem indexing tool with a Web based frontend.
Running platformindependently in a Web environment, its goal is to easily
find files in large archives, using a rich set of search configuration
options. Additionally, you may download single files or even create and
download zip files on the fly from the results of your search.
Changes: The Web GUI was redesigned, a setup application was implemented,
and HTML-based documentation was written for the installation HOWTO, tips,
and troubleshooting stuff. An XML config file is now used, and dynamic
reloading of the settings when they change was implemented. An initial
JavaScript-is-active check is performed, and a controller servlet which
creates a session before the first site is shown was written. Lots of
minor bugs on "bad" user behavior and in the GUI were eliminated, and
everything is now packed in jar files.

Saturday, September 28th 2002 14:30
Software Development
About: The Group Enabled Cluster Compiler (gecc) distributes the
compilation (of C/C++ code) on a cluster of hosts. Compiled code is
cached, so rebuilds with little or no changes to the source are much
faster.
Changes: The combination of caching and distribution is working. This
release is the first in which both features work with the much simplified

Saturday, September 28th 2002 15:35
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
About: Hydra is a high performance multi-threaded HTTP server. Unlike
traditional multi-threaded Web servers, it uses a constant, configurable

servers, since Hydra will use every available CPU in a multi-CPU system.
It also has features such as host-based virtual hosting, HTTP 1.1 ranges,
CGI 1.1, SSL, TLS, and more.
Changes: Initial support for dynamic modules that handle scripts

has a flexible configuration file with many sections and options.
Changes: All of the code was revised, and it now tests directories and
files in the database more carefully. The "acl", "db_owner", and "db_perm"
configuration parameters have been removed, and "db_group" was added.
Several bugs and a memory leak with the "db_dir" parameter were fixed. The

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: IPShutter listens for connections on one port, and upon proper
authentication temporarily unlocks a second port. The unlocking is brief
(by default two minutes) and only applies to the IP address from which
the authentication occurred. It is useful for restricting access to
sshd. It uses and generates one-time passwords for authentication, which
is accomplished with a Web browser. Abusive or password-guessing IP
addresses are subject to two levels of banning.
Changes: IPShutter now reads its configuration from /etc/ipshutterrc.

[029] - KStella 0.7.1
by Stephen Anthony (http://freshmeat.net/users/stephena/)
Saturday, September 28th 2002 19:59
Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Games/Entertainment
System :: Emulators
About: KStella is a KDE frontend to the Atari 2600 emulator, Stella. It
currently supports the display of snapshots, labels, manuals, the
configuration of individual game settings and of course, the ability to
play games with just a click of the mouse. All these features are fully
customizable to allow maximum flexibility.
Changes: The program was updated to work with (and now requires) KDE3.
Startup crashes were fixed. The online manual was updated to make it much
easier for first-time users, and the code was updated to work with gcc
3.2.

[030] - larswm 7.2.5
by Lars (http://freshmeat.net/users/lab1701/)
Saturday, September 28th 2002 20:06
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: larswm is a modified version of the 9wm window manager that adds
virtual desktops, automatic window tiling, and many other features
designed to make it a highly efficient user environment. One of the design
goals is that you should never have to manually shuffle windows around on
the screen. Another is that it should use as little CPU time, RAM, and
screen space for itself as possible.
Changes: The change to window handling when untiling a window was rolled
back since a lot of clients do not set proper size and position hints. If
you are using 7.2.4, upgrading is recommended.

[031] - MessageWall 1.0.7 (Stable)
by flamingcow (http://freshmeat.net/users/flamingcow66/)
Saturday, September 28th 2002 15:34
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: MessageWall is an SMTP proxy. It sits between the outside world and
your mail server and keeps out viruses, spam, and mail relaying. It offers
filtering via header and body checks, DNS-based blacklists for IP
addresses (DNSBL) and domains (RHSBL), DNS-based distributed checksumming
(DNS DCC) similar to Vipul's Razor, and Open AntiVirus pattern scanning.
Unlike many existing ISP-level filtering solutions, it offers
customization of filtering features on a per-address basis. Unlike
SpamAssassin, it communicates via SMTP, so it works with any MTA. It also
supports scoring based on rules with a rejection threshold; this allows
hybrid warning/rejection configurations based on how many and which rules
a message matches.
Changes: An SMTP compliance bugfix and a fix for a possible 100% CPU usage
bug, updated Red Hat startup scripts, and updates to the build system for
Solaris compatibility.

Saturday, September 28th 2002 12:27
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
About: With PHP-Content-Management-System (phpCMS), you need only one
template for your whole Web site. It allows you to provide dynamic menus
with as many menulevels as you want. It lets you use templates and
subtemplates without the need for a database. It is search engine-friendly
and proxy-friendly, which means that both search engines and proxies won't
distinguish the pages generated with phpCMS from static HTML pages. PHP
code can be added to any template and/or content file with an optional
module. phpCMS is cross-platform, so you can use it on Windows and Unix.
Caching of parsed pages and gzip compression speed up your server. The Web
site for this program is in German, but the documentation is also
available in English.
Changes: The indexer for full text indexing the search of phpCMS now works
over the HTTP protocol. The new profile wizard for the full text search
allows you to store the configuration of a full text search. With the
analyser you are able to identify the correct stopwords for your full text
search. The shell indexer also allows you to index via shell script (so
you can do the index job from a cron job or at job in Windows).
