Instant Messaging Clients
by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols (http://www.vna1.com/)
Section: Category Reviews
Saturday, September 21st 2002 00:00

Somehow, some way, people who are new to Linux have gotten the idea that
Linux has limited IM choices. Since the Unix family was the first to have
popular IM clients (with "talk" leading the way), that's more than a
little silly. It is true that if you want the latest AOL Instant Messenger
(AIM) features or MSN Messenger you're out of luck, but there are many
other clients to choose from, and some will let you talk to your buddies
whether they're on AIM, MSN, or even Yahoo!.

About: Archmbox is a simple email archiver written in Perl which can
extract email messages from one or more mbox-formatted mailboxes.

Changes: A harmless warning issued if any header of the email message is
undefined was fixed. The full name for the archive mailbox is used if
recursion is specified. Reports for list mode were slightly improved.

  Saturday, September 21st 2002 10:24

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

About: BINS is a valid HTML 4 photo album generator with support for
internationalization, EXIF, and customizable charset encoding, including
UTF-8 (Unicode). Albums can contains other sub-albums. The appearance of
the album can be fully personalized by using template and configuration
parameters. The number and size of scaled pictures can be chosen in pixels
or percentage of the original image. Several description fields (date,
location, etc.) can be associated with the pictures, and you can add
additional description fields. A command line utility or a GTK+ GUI can be
used to set or edit description fields. BINS can use the EXIF data
structure found in some pictures to automatically fill some fields (most
notably, date and time) and to produce a page providing all information
available on the picture, as well as the DigiCam settings when the photo
was taken. All image meta-data are stored in XML files.

Changes: joi templates and the Russian translation have been updated. A
new parameter allows the use of an image as a wallpaper.

[003] - C-Pec X-ISP 1.0.2
  by Limpens (http://freshmeat.net/users/limpens/)
  Saturday, September 21st 2002 08:12

System :: Hardware

About: C-Pec X-ISP is a KDE application for "in-system programming" of
89x668 and other devices. The application supports blanking chips, reading
and writing bootvector/statusbyte, block erasing and flashing devices with
hex/ihx files. Autobaudrate negotiation from the device works up to 9600
baud.

Changes: This release adds baudrate negotiation tested to 115200,
detection of "used" memory positions in the hexfile to speed up the
erasing phase, support for resetting the microcontroller and starting the
microcontroller from the software, and an erase/flash time report.

[004] - Cheap Threads 2.2.1
  by Scott McKellar (http://freshmeat.net/users/mck9/)
  Saturday, September 21st 2002 23:14

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Cheap Threads is a collection of portable C routines for
implementing sychronous threads. It includes a scheduler and a facility
for passing messages among threads. Threads may run in a round robin or
according to a priority scheme. Each thread must voluntarily relinquish
control from time, via an ordinary function return, so that other threads
can run. Since the threads are synchronous, i.e. they don't interrupt each
other, they don't need to use semaphores, mutexes, critical sections, or
other facilities to keep from interfering with each other. One version of
Cheap Threads is designed for embedded systems.

Changes: This release fixes a bug. When a thread terminated itself by
calling ct_wait(), its destructor function (if it had one) would be called
twice.

Office/Business :: Financial
Office/Business :: Financial :: Accounting

About: In order to leave Windows behind most people need a
fully-functional money management program. CheckBook Tracker seeks to
solve that problem. It has the feel and features of packages like
Microsoft Money without requiring the user to build their own sources or
find an RPM for their distribution. Its features include Transaction entry
similar to Microsoft Money, Import / Export QIF files straight from Money
or Quicken, autocomplete payee and category fields, and autocomplete
entire transaction based on recent payee.

Changes: This is a beta release. The file format should not change before
the finished product is released.

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Logging

About: grsecurity is a complete security system for Linux 2.4 that
implements a detection/prevention/containment strategy. It prevents most
forms of address space modification, confines programs with least
privilege via its process-based ACL system, hardens syscalls, and provides
many of the OpenBSD randomness features. It has auditing capabilities and
a netfilter module designed to thwart portscans and OS fingerprinting.

Changes: A segmentation-based implementation of PaX was included, which
provides all the benefits of the page-based implementation and improved
performance. Process-based resource restrictions and IP ACLs were added to
the ACL system, which is now more stable and faster and contains a feature
to stop brute-force exploits and log the IP of the attacker. Kernel stack
randomization was added, and Gradm, grsecurity's ACL administration
utility, was updated to v1.5.

  Saturday, September 21st 2002 10:22

Software Development
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution

About: IzPack is a powerful Java installer builder. It is able to create
lightweight and modular installers. You have the choice of the installer
panels you want to use (some can do the same job, so that you can select
the one you prefer), and you even have the choice of the kind of installer
that you want to use. IzPack doesn't use any portion of native code, it is
designed to be fully independent from the operating system that runs it.
It is very easy for the end user with a properly installed JVM to use an
installer made with IzPack, since a single "java -jar installer.jar" will
launch it.

Changes: When InstallPanel is the last panel, it no longer unlocks the
next button. ImgPacksPanel and PacksPanel can now display the total disk
space required. The MacOSX GUI and the GUI frontend have been fixed. A new
Italian langpack is available. File overriding (override or keep the old

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: LBreakout is a breakout game with nice effects, graphics, and
sounds. It's got a menu to configure a lot of things and a high score
chart. It can be played either by mouse or keyboard. New levels can also
be created, and most other aspects of the game can be customized.

Changes: This release features a pseudo levelset, "!Freakout!", that
allows you to play all 600 levels in a random order so that no game will
be the same. You can now work around badly designed levels with the new
'warp' function that gets you to the next level after you have cleared
enough bricks. The number of bricks necessary to warp to the next level
is defined by yourself in the 'Advanced Options' menu. Various bugfixes
were also  made.

[037] - PHP Layers Menu 2.1.0 (Development)
  by Marco Pratesi (http://freshmeat.net/users/pratesi/)
  Saturday, September 21st 2002 23:06

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: PHP Layers Menu is a hierarchical dynamic menu system to rapidly
choose among the items. It works with both PHP3 and PHP4. It achieves a
compact view and a reasonably small file size for the page with a very
large number of entries. Its behaviour is analogous to the GNOME, KDE and
MS Windows main menus. Menus are dynamically generated from the menu
structures. It supports Mozilla, Netscape 4.x, 6.x, and 7.x, Konqueror,
Opera 5 and 6, and Internet Explorer 4, 5, 5.5, and 6. It also provides
solutions for browsers not supporting Javascript.

Changes: The vertical coordinates of links are obtained as DOM properties,
so the detection of the position of the mouse pointer is needed only for
Netscape 4. This change strongly improves the behaviour of this menu
system.

About: The Linux scheduler utilities take advantage of the scheduler
family of syscalls that Linux implements across various kernels. These
system calls implement interfaces for scheduler-related parameters such as
CPU affinity and real-time attributes. The standard UNIX utilities do not
provide support for these interfaces, thus this package. The programs that
are included in this package are chrt, irqset, lsrt, and taskset. Together
with nice and renice (not included), they allow full control of process
scheduling parameters.
