Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries

About: ADODB is a set of advanced PHP database abtraction classes. It
supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Interbase/Firebird, Informix, Sybase SQL
Anywhere, Oracle, MS SQL 7, Sybase, DB2, FrontBase, Foxpro, Access, ADO,
and generic ODBC. A metatype system is built in, making it possible to
figure out that types such as CHAR, TEXT, and STRING are equivalent in
different databases. It also features an SQL to HTML popup menu and SQL to
HTML table support. It has code to support record paging and blob/clob
support.

Changes: This release allows the performance of your database server to
be monitored via HTML and CLI interfaces.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Ajaqs is a Web app that organizes FAQs on a per-project basis. It
is designed to be deployed under popular Web and application servers. It
aims to serve two purposes: to provide engineering groups a mechanism for
consolidating and preserving in-house knowledge in connection to product
development and usage, and to provide small companies with a Web interface
for exposing searchable, internationalizable information related to
products and services.

Changes: SQL scripts have been ported to PostgreSQL; see build.properties
for relevant configuration. Additionally, miscellaneous enhancements have
been added to the main source line.

System
System :: Systems Administration

About: Alist is a program that collects hardware and software information
about systems and stores it in a database for users to browse and search
via a Web interface. The program consists of three parts: a client portion
that collects the information, a daemon that receives data sent from
clients, and a CGI that displays and lets you search for information.
Clients for Solaris, Linux, FreeBsd, OpenBSD, HP-UX, Irix, Windows, and
Mac OS X are currently available.

Changes: Active routes are now listed, better model detection info is
displayed, virtual interface detection was fixed, the memory detection
script was updated, and the disk_label bugs under Solaris were fixed.
Some memory collection bugs were also fixed.

pages. There is no limit to the number of pages you can track, nor any
restriction on its use. It is also lightweight (the tarball is less than
25 KB).

Changes: Referrers are now properly stored, even in the case of search
engine queries. The detection of a number of "exotic" browsers and agents
such as Charon was improved, and many cosmetic improvements and bugfixes
were made.

  Friday, September 5th 2003 14:09

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: Buildtool is a set of integrated utilities which make programs more
portable and easier to build on any kind of Unix-like system.

Changes: The qt_program type was added to bt_logic, which is useful for
building QT programs (this type adds support to automatically generate the
.moc files). Logging functionality was added to bt_logic to help debugging
and to let the developer know what's happening. A standard documentation
directory was added to all configuration scripts, and package documents
are installed into it by default. Support for long options on the command
line was added to all modules that still did not include it. Multiple
bugfixes were made.

[012] - Common UNIX Printing System 1.1.20rc1
  by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
  Friday, September 5th 2003 16:35

Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.

Changes: This is primarily a bugfix and performance tuning release and
includes fixes for 64-bit platforms, deadlock problems in the signal
handling code, PDF printing issues, Web interface issues, and various
operating system-specific issues. It also adds new CUPS API functions for
reading and writing files via HTTP, performing authentication, and
controlling the required PPD conformance level.

[015] - CWirc 1.3.0
  by Pierre-Philippe Coupard
(http://freshmeat.net/users/pierrephilippecoupar/)
  Friday, September 5th 2003 21:34

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Communications :: Ham Radio

About: CWirc is a plugin for the X-Chat IRC client to transmit raw Morse
code over the internet using IRC servers as reflectors. The transmitted
Morse code can be received in near real-time by other X-Chat clients with
the CWirc plugin. CWirc tries to emulate a standard amateur radio rig: it
sends and receives Morse over virtual channels, and it can listen to
multiple senders transmitting on the same channel. Morse code is keyed
locally using a straight or iambic key connected to a serial port, or
using the mouse buttons, and the sound is played through the sound card,
or through an external sounder.

Changes: This version added an adjustable QRM generator, signal strength
and sporadic-E propagation simulations, squelch, realistic sound mixing
with soft signal fade-out, and an extension of the CW frame format to
support grid square locations. Many minor corrections were made.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet
Text Processing :: Filters

About: DSPAM is a server-side anti-spam agent for UNIX email servers. It
masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and filters/learns
spam using a Bayesian statistical approach which provides an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam service. Each
email is broken down into its most interesting tokens, each assigned a
spam probability. All probabilities are then combined to produce a
statistical probability of spam. This approach, applied to a mature corpus
of email, has the potential to yield a 99.75% success rate with less than
a 0.03% chance of false positives.

Changes: A permissions-related security vulnerability has been fixed.
Potentially insecure functions are disabled unless
--enable-insecure-functions is explicitly used at configure time. The
locking mechanism has been reworked to support multiple dspam agents
sharing an NFS disk to function correctly. A minor quoted-printable
parsing bug has been fixed. Perl tools and CGIs have been recoded to adopt
--prefix information from configure. A bug in fixing "From" header
corruption in some implementations has been fixed. A minor miscalculation
in false positive reporting has been fixed.

  Friday, September 5th 2003 16:31

Education
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards

About: H2O is a system that supports gathering people around ideas. In
addition to the traditional features of learning management systems, H2O
includes support for collaboration between projects through the sharing of
syllabus elements and through joint discussions between projects. It also
supports Rotisserie-structured discussions, which provide an alternative
to traditional online discussion boards by structuring the timing and flow
of discussions. It can be used as a traditional course management
platform, but it can also be used for more informal projects centered
around the exploration of a set of ideas, whether the project be a
conference, an ongoing public discussion, or a traditional academic
course.

Changes: Per-user discussion participation: project leaders can use the
participant preferences screen to manage which users can participate in
rotisserie discussions and message boards, respectively. Cross-project
message board discussions: message board threads now have an Invite
Similar Projects link that allows a project leader to invite another
project to participate in a given message board thread. Project
announcements: project leaders can email announcements to project
participants.

stylistic verification and coding standard enforcements. The checked code
is assigned a mark based on the number and the severity of the
encountered problems. The previous mark of a given piece of code is
cached so that you can see if the code quality has improved since the
last check.

[060] - Quantum GIS 0.0.12 (Development)
  by Gary Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/mrccalaska/)
  Friday, September 5th 2003 21:30

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a Geographic Information System (GIS) for
Linux/Unix. It will offer support for vector and raster formats. It
currently supports spatially enabled tables in PostgreSQL using PostGIS
and common GIS vector formats such as Shapefiles. Due to the complexity of
creating a feature-rich GIS application, support for various data stores
will be added in a phased approach. Ultimately, QGIS will be able to edit
shapefiles and display geo-referenced rasters (TIFF, PNG, and GEOTIFF),
create map output, and support database tables. A plugin feature to
dynamically add new functionality is planned.

Changes: Enhancements were made to the selecting and identifying
features. Features on shape files can be selected by dragging the mouse
or highlighting records in the attribute table. The identify tool now
returns multiple features within the search radius. Various bugfixes were
 also included.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards

About: The Distributed Library Project is a distributed library of
people's books and videos, an experiment in creating community and sharing
information. Users create accounts complete with bios and interest
enumerations, then list the books and videos that they own. Those users
are then free to browse the books that others have listed, sorted by
proximity, interest, and book commonality. If a book or video is
available, a user can check it out directly from the owner. There is an
eBay-style feedback system for managing trust--users who return books on
time get positive feedback, while users who damage books or return them
late get negative feedback. These points create an overall "score" that
lenders can use to judge the trustworthiness of a borrower. The system
also supports user reviews, ISBN lookups, and collaboritve filtering.

Changes: Full language templating support, French and German language
translations, subdirectory installation support, fixes for geolookup bugs,
reading lists maintain order, a 'remember me' login feature, ISBN lookup

Games/Entertainment :: First Person Shooters
Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
Internet

About: The Virtual Object System (VOS) is an infrastructure and collection
of applications for building a multiuser object-oriented virtual reality
for the Internet. An abstract messaging layer (the VOS core) provides a
powerful abstraction, presenting a peer-to-peer distributed system as a
single unified whole. The 3D client (Ter'Angreal) enables any number of
users to interact in a virtual environment by communicating with one
another and by modifying and building onto the virtual environment itself.
This projects aims to realize the vision of a free 3D immersive Internet.

Changes: This version introduces the Compact Object Description (COD) file
format, which allows for loading and saving vobjects to disk and for
efficiently transferring vobjects over the network, reducing download
times. It is now possible to create VOS worlds using Blender and 3D Studio
Max. The Abstract 3D Layer (A3DL) has been revised. There is a now
complete set of coding tutorials available to introduce programmers to the
VOS API. Header files have been rearranged to make it easier to use VOS in
external projects. VOS now compiles on Solaris.

Text Editors :: Emacs

About: XEmacs (formerly known as Lucid Emacs) is a powerful, extensible
text editor with full GUI support, initially based on an early version of
GNU Emacs 19 from the Free Software Foundation and since kept up to ate

Lucid, Inc. with Sun Microsystems, Inc. and the University of Illinois
with additional support having been provided by Amdahl Corporation, INS
Engineering Corporation, and a huge amount of volunteer effort.

Changes: More work has been done on the DSO code, especially in the area
of compilation. The KKCC garbage collector has had some improvements made.
And a major overhaul and audit of all the PUI (Package User Interface)
documentation has been done.

Another primary module of the overall design is an optimizer module.

Changes: This version includes full support for ELF, including support for
both AMD64 and 32-bit X86 targets, full warnings for integer overflow,
full support for AMD64 RIP-relative addressing, and many AMD64 bugfixes
