Not from the beginning, but NEWS documents this pretty well:

BUS -> SUBSYSTEMS, ID -> KERNELS, SYSFS -> ATTRS, DRIVER -> DRIVERS.

098 was released in August 2006, so in software terms SUBSYSTEM and
ATTR have been around for ages.
