Same result.  Logfile is identical (apart from obvious differences in
names of tmp and scratch directories and the list of command line
switches) except for this line:
resolved /dev/md0 to /dev/md0
(only when -f /dev/md0 is used)

BTW: the man page says
       -f device    Specify the drive on which your  Master  Boot
                    Record  lives.  Usually,  this  is discovered
                    automatically.
Which should be /dev/sda in my case.  However, this also fails at the
same point.
