Fedora 9 install problem

I downloaded and verified a fedora 9 net install cd. I burned the cd
and verified the cd from the built in verify function.

I then installed fedora 9 on a test box and liked it and decided to
migrate my real working box to it.

The graphical install fails on the new box, Anaconda starts auto
detects the video card properly, then within 10 seconds the box locks
up tight, only a hard reboot will work.

A text mode install was successful, but the text based first time boot
wizards graphic configuration locks the system up.

I restarted the box in text mode (runlevel 3) and noticed the following:

X based config tools work fine. but startx fails and locks up the system.
As does system-config-display.

I have an MSI K9VGM-V mobo that uses an integrated VIA chrome9 graphic adapter.

Can someone point me in the right direction please, I just wanna get
this installed.

Thanks.

A seemingly dumb question! Gotta ask

My experments with puppy and my intention to go to fedora prompts this question.
I was unable in puppy to set up e-mail based on my yahoo SSL protocol I assume. So I would have to go to Yahoo to check, receive and answer if necessary.
So here is the seemingly dumb question. Lets assume I went totally linux, no access to windows (this will be a reality shortly) will I in fedora continue to not have e-mail capability, or is there a fetch it process by anyone that overcomes this Yahoo constraint. Please do not tell me about free yahoo mail I pay a ton each month for my yahoo DSL and plus mail would not change a thing in terms of Linux

nfs mounting error

All of a sudden (as in today), when trying to mount an nfs dir from one
of my servers it fails. I had updated udev to latest from koji (due to
bug in burning permissions), and rebooted and discovered the problem.
Downgraded back to udev from updates and still have problem (yes did a
reboot). Below is what I am seeing...

[root <at> scrappy ~]# mount /home/download
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server 'rpcbind' failed: RPC Error: Program not
registered
mount.nfs: internal error

I have made sure no errors were shown when restarting/starting rpcbind
and nfslock on the client side. The server side hasn't been touched so
it's not that. Something on client side has to be having problem.
Something with not talking with rpcbind maybe or rpcbind not really
runing even though it starts? On latter statement, I also don't see
rpc.mountd running on client side neither.

Networkmanager seems to ignore WEP code

This is how it goes... Networkmanager was working fine until I did the
first update of the system. From that day on, it seems to me NM ignores
the WEP key and keeps asking for the secrets again and again and again
and does not connect wireless. I already checked the key several times.
NM does find the wireless router (linksys) without problems. Does anyone
know how to reset NM and start over or does any one could shed some
light into this "black box"? Thanks a lot. Luis

Laptop Battery Life Again

Hi,

I noticed that when I boot on kernel 2.6.25,
my laptop battery, according to gnome, has 3h:40 min of
charge. However, when booting on a 2.6.24 kernel,
this number goes up to 4h:20 min.

Then, I collected some interesting links, discussing this issue.

1) http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue100

2) http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_reduce_power_consumption

3) http://kdekorte.blogspot.com/

4) http://samwel.tk/laptop_mode/faq

5) http://lwn.net/Articles/257426/

My questions are:

1) should I follow powertop advices blindly?

2) On the first link, in the topic

Reducing Power Usage Of Fedora

https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-August/msg00558.html

Raul Sundaram recommends using

echo 5 > /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode

Why this is not done automatically?

3) In the third link, there is an acpi script that really works,
and can be used to change the parameters, when switching from
battery to power chord (although some options are wrong,
specially the hdparm use - be careful).

4) What about laptop-mode-tools available from Dries' repo?

5) Why different kernels have different expectations, regarding battery discharge?

I would like to hear some advice, because I have not owned
a laptop for some time, and I do not want to burst my HD
or shorten my battery life.

Thanks.

I can't seem to use anything to burn a cd, thinking permission problems?
I don't know why it would be that, if it is the problem, as I didn't
