smartd invalid checksum messages

I am getting messages on many machines running smartd in syslog saying

smartd[22921]: Warning! SMART ATA Error Log Structure error: invalid
SMART checksum.

Looking through the doc, smartctl has an option (-bignore) to turn this
check off. However, I could not find a way to tell smartd to ignore it.

Is this possible ? Some admins get concerned because the message appears
to be a serious problem.

(Running smartmontools 5.33 on RedHat 3 or 4)
