You were immensely helpful. But my being concerned to remove a stone in the path one has tripped over isn't trolling, it's part of the open source ethic. In searching for clues to what was disabling my system, I found a bunch of other reports out there of very similar symptions - same error messages cycling in a way that results in delay of booting by several minutes, with continued trouble afterwards. Same failure of fsck scans to find anything wrong with the OS partitions, or fix the problem. So it's natural to ask, "Was my problem a one-off, or a clue to what's going wrong for a number of other people?" Sometimes, you know, there really are kernel bugs, even obscure ones that bite just a few people. I'm not expecting to get bit by this particular one again - if it is one - but after taking a day of my time to narrow it down and fix it, I'd rather spare others the same trouble, if I can contribute to doing that.
