I ran libtoolize right after a "make distclean", it then recommended
that I run "aclocal", which I did. After the configure & make cycle the
binary was created successfully. Thanks for that hint!

I am using
- autoconf-2.54
- automake-1.7.1
- libtool-1.4.2

Is any one of the tools outdated? Which versions should I be using?
