Well, yet again, I tried what you did, and with the same result :)  I
just successfully compiled Sylpheed from the CVS, right down to the
sylpheed binary in the .../bin directory :)

I am using the default versions of the above named packages that ship
with Red Hat 8.  As a result, I'll be eagerly awaiting the response to
