What if you are away from your computer, it gets new mail (10 very
important ones), then 10 minutes later gets new mail again (0 new).  I
would show zero then...

I had a problem with an email client getting new mail, then the
selector would show the newest one and mark it read.  Then it would get
new mail again and the poor bastard I never saw got marked read and I
would never know it.
