just out of intrest i would like the opinions of the group as to what would be a preferable format to post the bank/s as so as to being more universal for all please.

Any sequencer can receive, record and save SysEx bulk dumps, in their internal format, or for exchange in SMF format.

The only problem could be instruments with handshake mode (some old Roland gear), but it's possible to create handshake protocol (receive confirmation and transmit request). I did this 24 years ago with my Roland JX10, Atari ST and Notator sequencer. It worked quite well even with such problematic instrument concerning SysEx protocol and behavior.

With DX7 can't be any problem. You don't need editor for receiving and transmitting SysEx data.
