Welcome Simon! I'm not that near to where you are - I'm from Newcastle-under-Lyme, but I do have to go to Tamworth sometimes because the training centre for the company I work for is based in Tamworth (Martin Mccoll retail group) I wonder if the LP your dad heard was Cyclone ? It's a notoriously 'difficult' album for some fans, as it was so different to TD's output at that time (vocals, rock drummer, very prog-rock sound) and the vocal tracks are on side one and the mighty instrumental Madrigal Meridian takes up the whole of side 2. As a matter of interest, have you also joined the forum over at www.tangerinedream-music.com/forum ?? ----- Original Message ----- From: Tim Richardson To: tadream <at> yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, August 03, 2010 9:28 PM Subject: RE: [tadream] New member Welcome! -----Original Message----- From: tadream <at> yahoogroups.com [mailto:tadream <at> yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Simon Slator Sent: 02 August 2010 7:06 PM To: tadream <at> yahoogroups.com Subject: [tadream] New member Hi all! I've just joined the group and thought I'd best introduce myself. My name's Simon and I'm from Tamworth, UK. I joined the TD train just over 10 years ago: My dad got me into Jarre at a very young age, and a school friend got me hooked on Kraftwerk and Vangelis thanks to those Ed Starink "Synthesizer Greatest" compilations that were popular at the time, so my interest in electronic music blossomed there. I remember watching "Street Hawk" as a child, so that was most likely my first exposure. Little did I know at the time...! My dad once said he'd heard a Tangerine Dream album and that Side 1 was abysmal, but Side 2 was absolutely fantastic - I still to this day don't know which album he was on about, but it still planted their name in my head. Cue trips to the library to rent their CDs and try them for myself. Initially, I got on alright with "Stratosfear" but didn't like "Phaedra" - a bit 'too' weird. A few years later, the library had dug a few more TD CDs out of their basement so, not being one to write an interesting band off, I rented "Force Majeure" and "Tangram". With those albums, their music started really opening itself up to me. I rented "Phaedra" again just to see if I'd like it now - but no, still didn't get it. Bought "Rubycon" on vinyl - nope, didn't get that one either. One day, I was on my way to find this school where I was due to have a job interview, so I stuck some TD tracks onto my new Minidisc player, and listened to them on the bus. Click! On the fourth or fifth spin, I could finally appreciate "Phaedra". I didn't get the job I went for, but the very positive interview got me headhunted for another job. With a new-found interest in TD, and more money than I'd ever had in my life, off I went to start spending! And it all just grew from there. Today, my TD collection is very healthy and is endowed with albums from all eras and line-ups, including a number of their soundtracks and solo albums. I appreciate all eras and line-ups based on their own merits but am neither "fanboi" or "elitist". Looking forward to being part of the group - always up for a bit of TD-related chat so feel free to contact me off-board if you want to. If you live in the Tamworth or surrounding area, please get in touch - always good to know fellow TD fans in the locality. All the best, Simon.
