It's a very elegant solution from the developers/JEP POV but do you 
really want to confront the average user with this? I think I even 
wouldn't want to use this.

I think it would be smart to think up something (much) more intuitive 
and expandable.

I had envisioned something like the list that Miranda uses. A list with 
your roster (groups + contacts) with icons after every row. You can 
switch those icons/functions on/off by just clicking on them. Instant 
feedback, you don't have to think up complicated rulesets, you don't 
have to look up individual users. It's also much more expandable because 
you can use it to set alerts etc. If I want hide my precence from 
everyone except my GF then I just click the appropriate icon on this 
list. I also click the 'online alert' icon so Psi makes a sound (or 
whatever) when she comes online.

Hmm, just installed Miranda on my Linux box and it's not the program 
that contained that nice list. It was some multi-protocol client but I 
can't remember which one.. Licq? I'll see if I can find it again and 
then I'll make a nice screenshot :)
