You're probably right about it being ugly, but while this is a 
particularly big change, there have been times in the past where 
releases have brought in changes that have resulted in things not 
working for people, and it's been dealt with adequately.  There's not 
much gained by creating legwork to compensate for people's 
laziness/inattention (as if the "new version notes" windows that have 
started cropping up with some plugins aren't annoying enough already).

In any event, at this point the number of affected plugins is going to 
be comparatively limited.  It's the next one that'll cause most 
problems, and doing this now provides a stepping stone towards that.
