JMS Reader Slowing Down Until It Is Crawling

I have a queue with around 80,000 persistent messages.

I start a JMS Reader, (very similar code to the sample JmsJndiConsumer, but it saves the messages in a DB).
I notice that the reader starts out at a speed of around 50+ messages per second but then the speed starts to degrade, around 30 messages per second after 20 seconds, around 20 messages per second after another 100 seconds, around 1 message per second after another 100 seconds -- and the slow-down continues as the connection time increases.
Stopping and starting the session repeats the scenario (so that is how we are managing it for now....)

I have experimented with various changes to the Local Queue Parms and JNDI Bindings file parms, but nothing seems to make any difference.

What would be a good place to look to make changes to fix this gradual "slow down"?

regards, Derek.
