I don't know.
I just tried on a fresh bare install on a ubuntu 10.04.4 VM.
the only other packages I install were curl, git-core, and 
vmware-tools-esx-nox.

Do you have "build-essential" installed? (I didn't on that test run, now 
I just throwing ideas).
