Install fest

You guys up for an installfest?

We haven't had one in a long time and I think it's time again.

Windows installer and partitioning

Does the Windows installer (XP/Vista) allow the user to decide how he
wants to partition the drive? It's been so long since I installed a
Windows OS, I can't remember. I was going to be helping someone setup a
Windows/Linux dual boot, and I was trying to decide what to do if I
found out that the current Windows installation was only on one
partition that covers the entire drive.

Damien's presentation

Damien did a nice overview of using Wordpress for managing a website =20
and talk a little about the lanconica software.

We held a little trivia contest and I gave away two books, =20
Ubuntu-for-non-geeks and The Productive Programmer.

After the demo we broke up into little enclaves and hacked away at =20
different projects.

One of the discussions surrounded a user wanting to get started with =20
Linux on his Windows box.

The discussion led to using Vmplayer (or Virtual Box) on the windows =20
machine so that he could get his feet wet.

Then work his way towards using Linux as his desktop.

As happens from time to time, we run into folks that have a real need =20
to continue using Windows...this was one. However, he was willing to =20
give linux a try in a vm....and in my book it is a step in the right =20
direction.

Hope to see more of you as we continue to build our membership.

With the way the economy is going, I think folks are looking for ways =20
to reduce costs and improve stability.

Come join us!

I ran top as root. I also did a "cat /proc/cpuinfo".

Job hunting

So, my employer (Not EEI, my current full-time employer) is laying me
off due to funding issues (projects just aren't there right now) so I'm
in the job market. I've applied for a couple jobs at UAF, but there
isn't anything else in the area. If you know of any companies in
Fairbanks that are hiring, or companies elsewhere that would go for
telecommuting (which I've been doing for the past year, some travel OK)
leads would be appreciated. I've linked to my resume, but I'll sum up
here:

2+ years Python (and I've read the Django docs through, done some
experimentation)
5+ years Perl
9+ years Linux Admin
4+ years MySQL admin and general DB programming
Apache, Lighttpd, Postfix, Bind, PmWiki, Subversion (admin and user)
Some Windows 2003 admin
Small-network networking knowledge (i.e. I'll wire up your office, and
set up the firewall, but don't ask me about BGP)

Digital Overload

Hey Damian
I was just checking I was reading through your site and noticed the section
on top only showing one core
I was just making sure you were running top ad root, because I know with our
etch servers here that I manage
if top is not ran as root it only shows one core, but when you run it as
root it shows all 4 cores.

Another question about Debian repos

First I wanted to say thanks everyone for all the help on various
issues. I'd like to specifically mention the advice on the Nvidia
drivers. I tried the lastest binary and it installed without a
problem. Also, thanks for the info on streaming servers, and those
Icecast config files. I'm in the process of looking all that over,
although I've temporarily met my needs with a cheap hack: I put my music
files on a directory of one of my public servers, and then used simple
scripts on my other machines that mount the directory as sshfs, so I can
listen to the music from anywhere using any music player. (Overhead is
a bit high -- with all that encryption/decryption going on. Probably
should've used FTP.)
I've been researching more into Debian's release cycle, to better
acquaint myself with the distro. I like how they do things, with all
the checks and testing. That stability and security is important to me
(coming from some other distros whose repositories tended to be filled
with a lot of buggy packages) even if the release cycle is a bit slow.

I'm using the Lenny sources right now, and after Lenny is officially
released I'll probably stick with Lenny until the next stable release.
But here's my question: What if in the future there are one or two
packages from testing or sid that I'd like to try, but I don't want the
rest of my system relying on those branches? For example, say I wanted
the lastest Amarok features, or I really needed one package that just
wasn't available in stable. Do I need to download and manually install
those packages from off of the Internet, or is there a way I can install
those from the official repos without moving my entire system out of stable?

Meeting reminder

This is just a short meeting reminder about Damien's presentation
tomorrow night at Highland Tech.

It should be interesting.

Hope to see you there!

Icecast server configuration

Is anyone on this list currently running an Icecast2 server? I'm trying
to set up a server to stream out all my CC music, mainly for my own
use. It been a real pain trying to figure out everything -- like how
the config files should look, where everything should be placed, what
permissions should be set, etc -- even with online docs.
I was hoping someone might be able to give me details about their
current configuration, share config files, and that sort of thing.

I'm also open to suggestions for alternate software, though other people
seemed to say good things about Icecast. I played around with VLC a
bit, but I couldn't seem to get ogg music to stream.

The server is a Debian machine running out of the Lenny repos.
