Windows installer and partitioning

Does the Windows installer (XP/Vista) allow the user to decide how he 
wants to partition the drive?  It's been so long since I installed a 
Windows OS, I can't remember.  I was going to be helping someone setup a 
Windows/Linux dual boot, and I was trying to decide what to do if I 
found out that the current Windows installation was only on one 
partition that covers the entire drive.
