KnoppMyth R5.5 released

We got no advanced notice this time, so it's already in the wild :)

If anyone wants to help seed the R5.5 torrent, here's the torrent link:
http://mythic.tv/torrents/KnoppMythR5.5.iso.torrent

and here's a direct download link:

ftp://ftp.knoppmyth.net/R5/alphas/KnoppMythR5.5.iso

If possible, please download via ftp to reduce the leeching on the
torrent network and then seed the torrent from the completed file.

If you don't have a bittorrent client, try this link from your browser:

Sound Issue...

I'm running Hardy Heron (Kubuntu) on an MSI K9VGM-V board and having issues with the sound.

Some of the issues stem from Firefox 3.0, which I can't solve, but another arose when I attempted to install wine using apt-get.

I used "sudo apt-get install wine" and rec'd an error regarding "timidity" and "songwrite"

The main culprit seems to be this line...

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:84:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave  [fail]

I attempted to use the same command to install both timidity and songwrite, but the same error was thrown both times.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
SammyB

Next Meeting: Guest Speaker (Network Introspection with OSS Tools)

Howdy,

This month, we have a guest speaker coming up all the way from
Washington DC! His name is Brad, and he'll be speaking on "Network
Introspection with Open Source Tools".

His talk was accepted at the LinuxWorld conference this August -- and he's
offered to deliver it to us in exchange for some feedback!

The abstract:

-------
"Information Security is a hot field these days. However, most Security
Policies deal with the world from the perspective of high school physics
class: no friction, zero air resistance. This presentations intends to
demonstrate how to leverage a variety of Open Source Projects to gain a
better understanding of your network. Leveraging this understanding,
it's possible to attach security policies to networks that actually
increase productivity and limit wasted time and money.

Persons with sensitivity to Mockery of Corporate Policies should consult
their physician prior to attending."
-------

See you on Tuesday!
  -Eric

Experience with odd KVM behavior?

Has anyone had this issue before?

I have a server that will show a display with some KVMs, but not others.
It works with an older Avocent KVM rebranded for Dell, but will not work
with a Belkin, Linksys or newer Avocent KVM. So far as I can tell, it is
not a cable issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Best Regards,
Dennis Little

Korganizer

Does anyone use this? I'm trying to get it to send the notice of a
pending event to my mail (Alpine). I've tried using 'fleet <at> localhost' and
just 'fleet'. I don't want to use my regular e-mail address. That would
necessitate the message going out to my server and then being downloaded.
I don't see the need to do that. I know I had this working under RH7.1
with the old version of Korganizer.

OT: Television recommendations

Hi folks,

Although off topic, I know there are many here who are multi-media savvy.

Our family is looking for a new television for our satellite service.
We're looking at 32" LCD HD models, since we don't have any extravagant
needs. Here's a few questions that I have.

What makers are better?

Are there any specific features that we ought to consider?

Should we choose 720p or 1080p? What's the difference?

Thanks.

John Storey
