[OT] Looking for practical application of C++ for bro

In my quest to get my family FOSS I've already gotten them using 
Thunderbird and OpenOffice. I've also gotten my mom to be a bit of a 
geek (still working on it) and now I've begun it for my little brother 
by convincing him to take C++ this year in school. He's homeschooled so 
he's self teaching out of 'for Dummies'. This has lead to the problem 
that I face often and that is, there is nothing practical to put the 
knowledge to for us. So I thought I'd ask whether any of you had any 
ideas of projects he could do to practice what he's working on (he 
specifically mentioned he couldn't think of when he'd ever want to use 
an array).
