exim question

Hey,

I've searched the main exim docs to see if it implements RFC 3463 and
I can't find any such reference. I know there are some exim fans here.
Does exim not support that RFC?

(OT) Laptop Repair

Good Morning.

My daughter has a Dell Inspiron (5100) and she dropped it. Consequently, the LCD is cracked in a couple places.
I assume Dell sold a bazillion of these machines, so also, I assume parts are available...

Where might I go in the Southern NH or Mass. areas, to
get this Laptop repaired ???

Thanks In Advance

paulc

Booting NOT-Windows

I realize this isn't a Linux question, but maybe there's a Linux answer ;)

I have a Dell laptop, that should be running XP, and is less than a year old.  This morning, it decided that there was a file missing and it won't completely boot.  It doesn't even want to do a "SAFE" boot.  I put in XP's "recovery CD" and that lands me into a recovery console (which is basically a DOS prompt.)  I figured if I can at least backup some of my significant files, I won't even mind reinstalling the whole system, since there aren't too many "extras" (just a few freebies, like Open Office and Gimp) installed.

If I boot into this recovery mode with my external USB disk plugged in, I can see files on the main hard drive and on this USB disk.  But, I can not copy from one to the other.  I called Dell support, and was told that since the initial installation did not give the "Administrator" account a password, I've missed out on some useful recovery tools (that would have been a nice warning to get during the install.)

Since this machine has the ability to boot off a USB device or a CD, I wonder if I can boot up something else that will see all of my other disks, and let me copy my XP files onto my USB drive before I end up shipping this machine back to Dell (who said they'd just blindly replace the hard drive) or reinstalling from scratch.

Peg

[GNHLUG] MerriLUG Nashua, Thur 21 Aug, Linux is Finished?

Who : Everybody
What : Linux suggestions and improvements
Where: Martha's Exchange
Day : Thur 21 Aug **Tomorrow**
Time : 6:00 PM for grub, 7:30 PM for discussion

:: Overview

The kernel is done. Who would need features beyond KDE 3.4? Ubunto
installation is the acme of perfection. Should we stop developing
Linux and just use it?

Aside from applications, what new Linux features do you need? What
flaws bug you the most? Does code size and operating speed mean enough
these days to justify recoding? Does Vista have anything Linux should
add?

Should the United Nations (or maybe NATO) decree that all new
computer designs include a debugged Linux installer, as is done for
Microsoft products?

Come along for a pleasant summer evening in good company. Ponder
the future and what we can do about it.

GAFFitter bin packing software

Several weeks ago, somebody asked about software to efficiently pack
files onto several volumes (e.g. CDROMs). I don't remember whether
anyone mentioned GAFFitter, a program I just ran across that uses a
genetic algorithm. There's a discussion on page 17 of this electronic
journal:
http://www.sigevolution.org/issues/pdf/SIGEVOlution200801.pdf

The GAFFitter site is here:
http://gaffitter.sourceforge.net/

I have not tried it out.

If you're going to do your own wiring, remember to put a fuse in
series with your masterpiece. :)

If you buy one of those cigarette lighter adapters, make sure to check
its max current capacity... many of them (intended for small devices
like cell phones, etc.) can carry only 500mA. If you exceed that
load, they go into automatic shutdown. (Many of the store-bought
adapters also have an replaceable internal fuse.) You might be able
to find adapters for sale in local electronics/marine shops that can
carry as much as 1.5A.

Using gel cell or deep cycle marine *is* recommended. However, a
DC-AC inverter may or may not perform well. I tried powering a mini
tower (with an AT power supply) off a deep cycle marine battery this
way. I was disappointed and a bit surprised when it didn't work.
You'd think the power inverter would have been designed with laptops
in mind. ;)

Laptop external power from batteries (DC/DC)

Bringing this thread over here from gnhlug-org...

Someone brought up the idea of powering a laptop from DC sources,
rather than the traditional AC power bricks. This is strictly about
external power, not the laptop's built-in batteries.

Obviously, many laptops come with "travel adapters", designed to
plug into 12 VDC automobile "cigarette lighter" power sockets. If you
have one of those, and it works, use it. But things are not always so
easy.

  Case-in-point was a Dell Vostro 1700. It has a 17" display and
sucks power like a black hole sucks... everything. Dell doesn't offer
a travel adapter for it. According to the sticker on the bottom, it's
rated for 19.5 VDC at 4.62 A. Doing the math, that's 90 watts.
Dell-branded travel adapters seem to top out at around 65 watts for
some reason. 90 watts at 12 VDC is only 7.5 A, which doesn't seem
that big to me. I believe my car cig lighter socket is rated at 12 A.

I know laptops can vary their power draw quite a bit. In
particular, running the laptop while also charging the internal
battery is a major pig. So that 90 watts may be overly high.

I know a lot of travel adapters are misleading in their specs. A
travel adapter rated at 90 watts may only be able to deliver that when
running on AC. On DC, they may provide considerably less. This was
not mentioned in the published specifications. Again, I don't know
the reason for the limit, but I know it's caused me grief. When I
attempted to use such adapters to power a Gateway laptop rated at 80
watts, the laptop would continuously switch between line-power and
internal-battery, at about 0.5 Hz. Apparently the adapter was going
in and out of over-current shut-off. Happened with two different
adapters, one of which I remember was Kensington brand.

Inverters are an option, of course, but the DC->AC->DC conversion
tends to waste a lot of energy. Not a big concern if you're running a
car engine anyway, but if you're running solely off the battery, it
matters. Given that the discussion arose from a situation where a car
wouldn't be convenient (but a car battery in a box would be), I'm
curious about the battery-only scenario.

Looking quickly, I can't seem to find amp-hour ratings from car
battery makers/sellers. Google finds various third-party claims, but
they're all over the map (25 to 100 Ah on the first page alone).
Assuming 7.5 A, and again doing the math, that is anywhere from 3 to
13 hours of operation at full power.

I know if one was planning on doing this on a regular basis, a deep
cycle battery would be highly recommended. For a one-shot, though,
pulling the battery from a car might be feasible (?).

Anyone have additional information they'd like to share? Inquiring
minds... probably don't care. But I'd like to know. :-)
