The point is, that the nix philosophy being what it is, there are very often no tools that give an exact alternative to the proprietary tool. There are a large many projects that attempt to clone the proprietary tool, but as far as I can see, in all those attempts the clone is far below the original in quality. Some examples: OO word and doze word vb dot net and mono vb and gambas success stories are where cloning is not attempted and the nix tool develops in it's own way.
