The same on my laptop (Ubuntu Hardy, X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90). It appears to be very similar to the problem with Java displaying GUI (http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6532373). Try using the following: $ export LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=1 It works for me for both wm/wm and Java.
