It's probably not fixable, Solaris /usr/bin/awk is the old V7 awk or close 
to. Any clues as to why they do this, answers on a postcard...

On Solaris, I always have /usr/xpg4/bin in my path before /usr/bin, as it 
contains a nawk compatible awk.
